Scrolling through the figures, you might have noticed that Mozilla is slow and suffers from some significant speed drops. For instance, in the US, our download speeds dropped by at least 30%. In faraway locations like Japan, Australia, and Brazil, we lost more than half of our initial download speeds.
That said, we were impressed that the UK, which is close to our testing location, maintained about 90% of our starting download speeds.
Mozilla VPN’s upload speeds are also inconsistent. Apart from the Netherlands and Canada, all our testing locations lost more than 50% of our initial speeds. To put those losses in context, NordVPN, the fastest VPN in our tests, kept up to 96% of our initial download speed when using the nearest server. The lowest speed retention rate we got was 65% (Japan server), which is still faster than Mozilla VPN.
In terms of ping (which is vital for gaming without lags), Mozilla falls short. Its ping rises as much as 500, which we consider problematic for any VPN.

Mozilla VPN uses ChaCha20 encryption with the WireGuard protocol, which is a high encryption standard. This scrambles your data in a way that makes it impossible for anyone to read.
The WireGuard protocol is a lightweight protocol that’s ideal for anyone who wants fast connection speeds. Since Mozilla VPN offers only one protocol, there’s no option to switch VPN protocols.
Kill switch
Mozilla VPN comes with an “always-on” kill switch. It’s a feature that suspends your internet traffic when your VPN malfunctions for whatever reason. This prevents you from accessing the internet unprotected and leaking your private data.
This fail-safe is so important that the Mozilla VPN client doesn’t allow you to turn it off. However, “always-on” shouldn’t be confused with the “permanent” kill switch offered by Proton VPN. The latter doesn’t let you access the internet without being connected to a VPN server, period.
We checked if the kill switch works using Pagerefresher and WhatIsMyIPAddress. Fortunately, our original IP address didn’t show up at any time, indicating that the kill switch works as expected.
Split-tunneling
Mozilla VPN offers a split tunneling feature. You can find it in the settings menu under the “App Permissions” tab.
Split-tunneling feature allows you to specify which sites and apps should use the VPN and which can access the internet without protection. For example, you’ll want to use your VPN to stream Netflix US but might not need it for YouTube videos.
Split-tunneling allows you to conserve bandwidth and even boost your connection speed. We were able to exclude apps and use the split tunneling feature easily.
Built-in adblocker
Mozilla VPN comes with an ad blocker that reduces the number of ads you see while browsing. We checked it against ad-riddled websites, and it seemed to struggle, as many ads made it through. You’ll have better results with Surfshark One, which is one of the best VPNs with built-in ad blockers.
Mozilla VPN also has a tracker blocker, which stops websites from tracking your internet use. There’s also a malware blocker, which saves you from all kinds of online threats, including phishing scams.
Multi-hop servers
Mozilla VPN offers multi-hop (a.k.a. double VPN) servers, which route your traffic through two servers instead of one. This adds an extra layer of security to your traffic.
We recommend multi-hop if you handle sensitive information and want to make doubly sure that no third party can access your data. No wonder multi-hop is a favorite of activists and journalists. That said, this feature can slow down your internet connection.
Mozilla VPN doesn’t have preset multi-hop server locations. Instead, you can select your own double VPN server combinations.

All of Mozilla VPN’s settings are at your fingertips, and we like that it has explainers for various features, making it easy for beginners to follow. Mozilla VPN has a Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS app. However, we couldn’t find the Mozilla VPN Android app on the Google Play Store, even after changing our virtual location to the US. Plus, sometimes its servers simply wouldn’t connect.

Setting up Mozilla VPN on Windows is easy. Simply go to Mozilla VPN’s download page and click to download the Windows client. The app should download within a minute and should take another minute or so to install.
Mozilla VPN Window’s client is as basic as they come. The home screen features a button you can toggle to turn the VPN on or off. You can also select your preferred locations from the home screen.

We were able to change multiple settings, such as protocols, without any issues.

None of the instructions from the help center on troubleshooting server connections worked. We had to uninstall and reinstall the VPN to get it to work.
